The principles of self-determination are based on the belief that ALL PERSONS HAVE EQUAL VALUE.

Self-Determination Means That:

•  All people have the right to direct their own lives in the manner they decide.

•  All people have enough information available to make decisions that lead to informed choices.

•  People take responsibility for outcomes arising from their informed choices.

The Principals of Self-Determination Are:

DIGNITY AND RESPECT - All people have the right to be treated with dignity and respect and to be respected as a whole person (body, mind and spirit)

RELATIONSHIPS - All people need a support network or circle of close friends and family to provide strength and assistance.

CHOICE - All people have the right to choose what they will do with their lives and with whom they will do it.

CONTROL - People have the power to make decisions and control all aspects of their lives.

DREAMING - All people have dreams and goals. A commitment to helping people fulfill their dreams is essential.

CONTRIBUTION AND COMMUNITY - Everyone has the ability to contribute to their community in a way that is meaningful to them.
